The History of
Olivet Church
Olivet Church was organized in 1871 with eighteen charter members. The present house of worship was erected the same year, promoted and financed by Col. David T. Reynolds, a charter member. The church stands seven miles north of Pulaski, on the east side of Highway 31. Reynolds and Albert Buford, who later united with the church, gave the land making a joint deed.
Reynolds gave the land for the Olivet Parsonage and had the building erected at his own expense in 1874. He deeded the parsonage to the church for its use and benefit.
Before 1951, the sanctuary was the Sunday School rooms. The Amen corner on the right, to halfway back on the right and left and the choir seats made the Sunday School rooms. To make way for Highway 31, forty feet of land was taken from her frontage in 1927. The building was lifted up and set back several feet over a full-sized basement.
The Church acquired the title to the abandoned Olivet School (built i1893) building and land, which was developed into a community center. The school is now the meeting place for Boy Scout groups.
The Church basement was finished into a fellowship hall, kitchen and classrooms when the church was moved in the 1950s.
Today, the church is furnished and retained as it was made in 1871. Since it has remained like it was, it has been added to the National Historical Society.
The pulpit and pulpit furniture were given by Mr. James Giddens (1902-1913) and has remained the same all these years. The seats in the sanctuary are as they were in the beginning with dividers for the men and women.
Olivet Church professes the Christian faith, established on the Holy Trinity; Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit and the confession of Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God, and the resurrected
Lord of heaven and earth.
The Holy Bible is the inspired word of God and is the basis of our statement of faith.
Olivet Church is committed, as a body of believers in Jesus Christ, to share the good news of
salvation to lost mankind. The ordinances of the church are baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
Marriage is a biblical institution established by God as described by Scripture. We
believe the biblical ideal for marriage is the uniting of one God created man and one God created
woman in covenant commitment.
Church can be an intimidating place to visit — especially if you don’t know what to expect. We invite you to experience what the gospel means both intellectually and relationally at one of our Sunday worship services. You can engage with others as much as you want, or remain anonymous if you prefer. We hope that through visiting with us, you will experience the hope, love and joy that comes from a community of people who love Jesus.
